Antecedent and Current Factors Inhibiting Functional Literacy Development among Craft Worker in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria

One of the most outstanding problems facing Nigeria is mass illiteracy and most importantly, the lack of meaningful ameliorative strategies in place. The aggravating rate of literacy among Nigeria workforce is one significant social cog in the wheel of her developmental progress. With particular focus on adult craftsmen and women, this study investigates the socio-cultural factors inhibiting functional literacy development among craft persons in Ijebu Ode, Southwestern Nigeria. A combination of judgmental and convenience sample methods was used in choosing seven participants for this study. The data were collected through a structured face-to-face in-depth interview. Thematic and content analysis of existing literature was carried out. The study reveals a plethora of socio-cultural factors undermining literacy development among artisans in Ijebu Ode. The study, therefore, raised practical and policy recommendations for parents, adult educators and government.
