Influence of Big-Five Personality Factors and Gender on Organisational Citizenship Behaviour of Nurses in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) highlights extra roles performed by employees that go beyond their specific job requirements expected by the organisation and enhance coworkers’ welfare, team-work and or the organisation in which the sole purpose is to promote the organisations’ performance, efficiency and achieving organisational aims and objectives. This study investigated the influence of the Big-five personality factors and gender on OCB of nurses in the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. A total of two hundred and fifty (250) registered hospital nurses participated in the study. The study utilised a survey research design, using the ex-post facto type. Data were analysed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC); Multiple Regressions analysis; and t-test statistical tools. The results of coefficient of correlation indicate that conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, openness dimensions of personality as well as gender were found to be significantly positively correlated with OCBs. Conscientiousness and extraversion were the niost potent predictors of OCB of nurses. Openness dimension of personality made no contribution to the dimensions of OCB. The independent variable (Big-5 factors) jointly accounted for 40.3% variance in the prediction of organisational citizenship behaviour of Nurses. The results also revealed the t-test analysis showed a significant difference in OCB based on gender of nurses. Recommendations and implications for practice in nursing profession were discussed.
