The Contributions of Community Service Initiatives Organisations to the Needs of Abused Women in Nigeria

Violence against women is the most pervasive yet least recognised human rights abuse in Nigeria. It is time to end this outrage and create a society where our mothers, sisters, aunts, niece, daughters and partners are valued, safe and empowered. This paper investigated the contributions of community service initiative to the needs of abused women. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study while purposive random sampling technique was used to select 110 abused women from the community service initiative organisations. Chi-Square statistical analysis was used to analyse the data collected for the study. The study revealed that there was significant relationship between the level of contribution of community service initiative organizations and the level of meeting the needs of abused women (X2-Crit=9.48, X2-Cal = 16.09, df = 4, P < .05).The study established that there is no significant relationship between the challenges that abused women faced and the commitment of community service initiative organisations (X2-Crit=16.91, X2-Cal = 7.01, df = 9, P < .05). The finding showed that there is significant relationship between the perceived results of the contributions of Community Service Initiative Organisations (CSIOs) and women survivors from abuse (X2-Crit=15.92 X2-Cal = 18.15, df = 6, P < .05). The study, therefore, recommended that community service agencies should offer different programmes and services for women who are or were subjected to abuse in their intimate relationships. Stakeholders and Non-Governmental Organizations should create awareness for violence against women by educating the public in order to prevent and reduce violence against women.
