Abstract

This paper examines the issues, challenges and prospects in the working conditions for women in the workplace. The paper is based on secondary sources. Adopting Liberal Feminism, the paper analyses women’s participation in the labour force and their respective conditions of work. Literature indicates that despite the Millennium Development Goals and Beijing Platform of Action, there are still disparities in conditions of work and income levels between men and women doing the same work, women are excluded from certain occupational categories and progression to the top management level is slower for women than for men due to marriage and family burden. Some of the challenges identified include: gender discrimination, sexual harassment, lack of access to agricultural inputs, etc. The paper recommends, among others, that the governments should ensure the enforcement of the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women.
